Ballroom Dancing For Kids!

“There are shortcuts to happiness, and dancing is one of them.” –Vicki Baum

As the subtle signs of winter fade away, many parents discover their children coming down with a case of “spring fever.” After a few months of bundling up and staying inside, children have a surplus of pent up energy, and moms and dads find themselves searching for new exciting activities.

While some children develop a love for sports, some long for a more creative outlet. Ballroom dancing provides the perfect combination of physical activity and artistic expression. With a wide variety of styles, from swing to salsa, tango to samba…ballroom captures the attention of even the youngest of students.

Initially, many parents enroll their children in dance classes simply to get them off the couch and moving. However, they quickly learn that dancing provides many additional benefits to what first meets the eye. Below are just a few of the many skills a child acquires when enrolling in ballroom dance:

  1. Physical Health: While dancing is a cardiovascular activity, it offers much more than stamina and heart health. Ballroom also helps children to develop flexibility, balance, and proper posture.
  2. Socialization Skills: Ballroom dancing is not a solo sport! In addition to step patterns and techniques, lessons also encourage students to develop respect for their partner. Dancing together encourages teamwork, and often leads to long lasting friendships.
  3. Academic Benefits: Ballroom challenges children to use every part of their brain. Working through the variety of dances and steps enhances creativity and forces children to learn focus, problem solving and concentration.
  4. Self Improvement: Confidence is of utmost importance to young people. Ballroom allows children to express themselves in a safe environment, and helps them to feel comfortable with themselves and interacting with others.
